Web Design Workshop 1

Home Zone

During my Web Design Workshop in my last year of College, my team was tasked with creating an app based around the current market and situation we found ourselves in. Because this was the first semester we were in after the Covid-19 pandemic started, my team and I decided on a task manager app to help those working and learning from home to stay focused, motivated, and healthy.

The idea behind Home Zone was to provide a valuable tool for the user while working from home during the pandemic. The features of which include:

  • To be able to create, edit, and complete/delete tasks from a list they've created.

  • To have an adjustable focus period timer (based on the Pomodoro timer method).

  • Give users various tips to stay comfortable and healthy.

  • Have a page with more in depth health resources for working at home.

Throughout the lifespan of the project, the focus was placed mostly on mechanical features as it was intended to be a tool and if none of the pieces worked, my team and I wouldn't be satisfied. While my role was UI/UX most of my time went into designing the UI and making alterations along the way as the Developers started implementing features. While user trials were carried out, the structure of the app was not as heavily impacted as previous projects.

As the first full Web App I've developed with a team, I'm really proud of Home Zone. I learned a lot about how to communicate to developers as a designer, and the value of visually communicative wireframes. Being able to deliver a product with lots of features and still have aesthetic appeal under the circumstances we were under was immensely satisfying, and I couldn't be more thankful to the team I was working with for making it happen.
